If Apple starts out the reporting period at 2 and others at 98, and AAPL increases sales by 43% while the others increase by 10%, then AAPL's new market share is 100x(2+0.86)/(98+9.8) =~2.7%.
So maybe the answer is that saying market share went from 2% to 2.7% just isn't as impressive as saying growth was 4 times the industry average.

I am going to chime in supporting Dan's approach to this (market share) question. At the same time, however, I think that no matter how much Internet junkies (us), shareholders (many of us) or others may want specific data from a corporation, it is not corporate malfeasance or anything approaching that if they decline to give it out. It is no mystery to me why Apple might not want to get involved in a market share debate. I don't see Safeway, Albertson's, WalMart or GM announcing their market share on a regular basis, if at all (although perhaps I just miss it), even though others may try to calculate or infer that share. I am certain that they have their own internal estimates, though.

Apple is profitable, growing, both absolutely and relatively, and has not been hit with any accounting or disclosure scandals. So what's the big deal? I would like them to continue to breakout sales by product (iMac, Power Mac, etc.), but they are going to stop doing that. I am disappointed, but it is their choice. I can vote with my shares. If there was intentional obfuscation going on, that would be another (and legal) matter, but not choosing to disclose all proprietary information in a manner that pleases everyone is something I will not lose sleep over.

JMHO,

Kip
