Really the only business the government has in saying who can "marry" whom has always been as a tax deduction. You could support a parakeet (or hamster) as a sole dependent if you wished and get a tax break. This has always been on the books. The state should get out of the way of saying what is "right" or "wrong" in human relationships that are not harmful to persons. In other words it is just as silly to "sanctify" a style of living as it is to outlaw it.

Marriage is not the state's business except to recognize the financial aspects of dependency support.
