I guess I have a diff perspective

We do have different perspectives. That was my point. From the patter I've gotten from real estate sales people and chatter from colleagues, it would seem than many folks consider a home purchase primarily an investment decision. I am not among them. I want a home environment that suits me.

So NIMBY means different things to different people. Personal aesthetics and real estate values are both factors but differ from person to person. I live a stone's throw from an interstate, which some would consider undesirable, but I have no windows on that side of my home so I can't see it and I can hear it only rarely--the occasional faint siren or wound-up motorcycle in the still of the night. I look out my windows now and see sky, trees, slate roofs, squirrels, birds, and cherry blossoms. That suits me.
