Religious leaders from across the country are beginning to raise the voice of their moral authority in a newly formed organization, Clergy and Laity Concerned About Iraq. Representing more than 50 denominations running the gamut of Christians, Jews, Muslims and then some, it was launched with a major event at New York’s Riverside Church on the anniversary of Martin Luther King’s speech that he called "Beyond Vietnam," in which he said: "I knew that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continue to draw men and skills and money like one demonic, destructive sucking tube." Substitute Iraq for Vietnam, and Martin’s prophetic words of April 4, 1967, apply just as painfully today. The group has begun a national bus tour of religious leaders, with the potential to capture the attention of the media and counter the influence of the religious right. It can be a catalyst that can turn the tide of our nation’s drift to darkness instead toward the light of goodness. But these committed, courageous religious leaders are long on faith and short on money. A national bus tour is expensive. It’ll cost $100,000 to conduct. If you want to stop this crazy war of choice, support our troops by bringing them home, and get our nation to spend its tax dollars in accordance with our values, please, please, please give what you can .
