well the savings rate doesn't include investments in real estate or whatever else that is the problem. How much money do you actually save in a passbook savings acct? Not much I'd venture to guess. Although with this market, I wish I'd walked away in 2001 and put all my money in a 1% savings acct.

That low savings rate is exactly why the rich/poor divide is growing. The lower middle class and poor are spending everything and racking up debt. The upper middle class and rich save a ton of money. The dichotomy is a problem encouraged by the permisive lending environment out there. But the market will correct. The lenders will get burned. BTW, I'm like you. We save more than 50% of our gross income. I don't see it as a luxury. I see it as a necessity to plan to retire without counting on social security, since the Democrats are blocking any reform in that area.
