The NRA is actually just a very small fraction of the real gun lobby. The NRA only has 4 million members out of 80 million gun owners. The really powerful lobby is in the smaller grass roots organizations like Right to Keep and Bear Arms and other Libertarian outfits like the Cato Institute. It works just fine for me that the NRA is the lightning rod because that diverts all attention from the rest of the groups who don't cave-in like the NRA often does.
