Hmm. That is suspect. Let's do the math. I drive 1K miles per month and my current car gets 20 mpg. So I have to buy 50 gallons of gas per month. Right now it costs me $2.30 to buy gas, so that equates to $115 per month.

Now, I was telling Suma the other day that I fully intend to buy a Prius when my current car dies. My current car has 121K miles, so that's not too far away. If I use the Prius the same way I do, my other car, I will only have to buy 20 gallons of gas a month to get the same mileage (Priuse gets 50 mpg). So that would cost me $46 per month, which is a total savings of $69.

Now a Prius costs about $25K nowadays, so if I financed that over 5 years, I'm sure that would cost me more than $69. But I plan to pay cash for my Prius. I already have the money saved. So I will be perfectly happy to take my $69 a month, go play golf once more a month, and thumb my nose at the oil barons of the Middle East. :)
