If i had to punch a terrorist in the nose to find out the route of the truck bomber, i would do it.

So would I. If I believed that that is what would actually get the information.

The problem is
(a) most of the people who have been tortured or at least imprisoned in Iraq haven't been guilty of anything (how do I know that? Well, good question--I'm going on the fact that the vast majority of them have been released without being charged with anything, or so it was reported some months ago).
(b) Even if you are sure that guy is a "terrorist," you can't be sure that he has the information you want.
(c) Even if he has the information you want, you can't know that this information is still valid or not, beyond a certain time limit (the enemy could easily change their plans after the capture of someone with this kind of information).
(d) Even if the information is valid, you can't be sure that this terrorist will actually tell you the truth in response to the torture--if he/she is a terrorist with any intelligence, he would have alternate stories made up for just that contingency.

On the whole, torture is pretty stupid.
