re: My point is that cheap gas (cheaper than much of the rest of the developed world) doesn't encourage conservation -- if you want conservation and alternative fuels you aren't going to get it without gas getting more expensive first. Or the cost of your gas guzzling car. People react to big chunks of money more than incremental increases. And a gas tax hurts those that can afford it the least. Tax the autos; as the NRA would say "People don't waste gas, cars do" (actually the other way around, but you get the point). John
