I would presume that the missing atoms devolved into energy, just like hydrogen atoms do when they fuse into a lesser number of helium atoms, thereby emitting enough energy to give sunlight, and therefore, all life on earth.

This is way out of my field. I concentrate on gathering energy from the sun at a rate equivalent to 300 gallons of gasoline per acre per year, which is what a healthy forest does.
