Did you notice the pump-and-dump(*) on Cardinal Ratzinger lately?

paddypower.com

With odds of 3:1 Ratzinger is the frontrunner.... I bet you some slush fund is involved: Lustiger's backers must be busy shielding their champion from media scrutiny by pushing up the decoy Ratzinger. Only yesterday I was baffled to see on France2's 8PM newscast a reportage on UK bookmakers and the next Pope: Lustiger was reported as the #2 favorite nationwide!! Don't get me wrong, what baffled me was not the fact per se but rather the fact that the French TV blurted it out, complete with a 5-sec footage of Mgr Lustiger in Notre-Dame Cathedral.... Anyway, only a couple of days to wait for the usual Habemus Papam...

Straight from the racehorse's mouth:

Papal Prospects Who Aren't on the Short List

By David Crary
Associated Press

[...]

Two French cardinals are sometimes mentioned: Philippe Barbarin of Lyon, who is only 55 and is known as an advocate for immigrant rights, and retired Paris Archbishop Jean-Marie Lustiger, 78, a confidant of John Paul's, a Jewish convert and a skeptic about lists of front-runners.

"All the names that have surfaced have been invented by journalists," [Lustiger] said recently. "What happens is that most of the time, those who get it are completely unexpected."
