Brian, chalk it up to fear of the unknown and a desire
for self preservation. Fear causes the herd to flee.
No rationality is required. By the same token, no one wants
to be at the back of the herd where the predators lie in
wait to pick off the stragglers or those who dawdle. Predators stay out of the way of a herd but are quick to attack the weak or unwary who stray too far from the safety of the herd. There is something to be said for the concept of safety in numbers, it reduces the risk of exposure. Ever
notice how a stampeding herd is clustered close together.
Once the stampede is over the herd spreads out a bit as
calm takes over.
