What I am after is academic freedom for the Profs, and free speech for the students.

That's much too narrow a way to frame a host of pressing issues. It's not a good to think of either in absolute terms. Lots of variables play into any given instance.

You can't have, for instance, faculty members who grade on the basis of political viewpoint and you can't have students who disrupt classes because of a political viewpoint. Just doesn't work.
