For every hour a kid is in Chicano studies or environmental studies classes, he's not learning history or philosophy.

Actually she may be learning more history or philosophy here than in a history or philosophy course. A good Chicano studies course on the history of Anglo-Chicano relations can open up American history for a kid who would sleep through the usual stuff. And then read more, working out from the relevant to deeper explanations for it.

To take another tack, the way to Descartes may well be through Simone de Beauvoir (sp>>)
