My concern for the Krugman line of reasoning is that it slanders the quality of care, when the real issue is its availability. Nope, Krugman makes very specific points here: infant death mortality rate and lowered life expectancy. They can be addressed by noting flawed statistics. You say they are flawed but offer no evidence. I appreciate the problem with bringing those forward. It would be a large task, one I'm not asking you to do. I'm not faulting you for not so offering; just noting that, in their absence, I'm not persuaded. The comment from Brian Carnell is an eloquent expansion of your earlier observation but doesn't provide the data. It may well be that the data can not be provided. But if they could, it would be interesting to see just how much of a difference it makes. Very, very hard to tell. So I'm not arguing this doesn't occur; just without data we cannot determine how much it matters for the final statistics. As for whether Krugman is accountable for the quality of his data, of course he is. As one of our premier economists, he is even more so. If you can present evidence that he has fouled up his data, please do so.
