It is possible for GMO crops to be harmful, but the risks are IMO not out of line with risks from regular crops.

Some opponents of GMO crops and other new technologies or ideas would apply "the precautionary principle" where something has to be proved harmless before you can use it. A strict interpretation of this idea would bring technological progress to a stand still, and even a more flexible application would, I think, be more likely to cause harm than GMO crops are.
