The problem with the 30's depression was we were on a gold standard that limited the amount of available liquidity without increasing gold reserves, hence why gold coins were confiscated during that time in a feeble attempt to build reserves.

And it can be said thats why nixon broke bretton woods because the debt from the veitnam war, space race, cold war defense etc nearly brought on a crises when we almost defaulted on our bonds.
