I saw many at the Avalon and a few at the Filmore, but the one I remember best was my first date with a girl I'd never had the courage to approach in high school. But we went to different colleges and ran into each other. The show was The Steve Miller Blues Band opening for Canned Heat with an appearance by Paul Butterfield. That sounds like too much blues for me, but Steve Miller's band, with Boz Skaggs, wasn't really blues. The announcer kept saying to stay late because he had a surprise. Jefferson Airplane hit the stage after the other show finished and did a great hour.

I used to see the Dead for free in the Park and Columbus Square (or is it circle? Don't remember any more). Back when Pigpen was still alive.
