$50 isn't even dinner and a movie. The real effect is felt throughout the economy...food, cost to produce and transport goods, etc.

You know, all the things that should count in the CPI but don't anymore?

consumption would have already fallen imo if not for refinanced mortgages, lower mortgage payments, home equity loans. people are spending their savings in lower, middle incomes to keep up. this money is beginning to run out. It is being felt in retail stores like dollar general.. gasoline sales and suv's etc will be next.

I've only spent $48 this year on gas (three fill-ups; Jan.5. Feb. 28, April 10). Two years ago, I spent more like $250 by now with the same car. The weather was a factor, but I've basically just done less discretionary rambling.

I run further than I drive <g>.
