David, Does it not strike you

It doesn't. You're talking to a guy who thinks the Jews destroyed the Twin Towers.

Does it not strike you that there is just something fundamentally wrong with the government confiscating your property from your children when you die?

Do you guys have a solution for the staggering deficits?

Al

Maybe but don't you think its fundamentally offensive to watch someone like Paris Hilton parade her inherited wealth around for all to see?

Of course not. A wise man once said that "taxes are the price we pay to live in a civilized society."

Without the infrastructure and opportunities presented to individuals by society, individuals would never have the ability to acquire outlandishly large fortunes.

When I grew up in the 1960s, we were taught that America was different, and better, than the ossified societies of Europe because we never made the mistake of creating a permanent aristocracy, which is what the ending of estate taxes will result in.

For some understanding of the situation, I strongly recommend that you read the history of wealth in America that Kevin Phillips presents in "Wealth and Democracy".

What is wrong with a permanent aristocracy? Let's begin with the corruption of government, which we are witnessing today, with the wealthiest people in the nation writing a series of laws that benefit themselves and harm the rest of society. While fat cats fill their bank accounts both here and in tax havens across the planet, the basic infrastructure of America is starting to fray. Education, roads, public transport, affordable housing and health care are increasingly neglected while the elite indulge their fantasies of world domination with the most ruthless and rapacious military on the planet. Increasingly, as can be seen in the mean-spirited bankruptcy bill, average Americans, especially those who have suffered from predictable bad luck such as a medical crisis or job loss are becoming treated in an increasing harsh regime that irrationally provides society's rewards to the lucky, the aggressive and criminal element of society. Decent people are left behind by more aggressive individuals controlling corporations that increasingly act either above the law or with an eye toward corrupting our laws for the advantage of the corrupt elites.

This is the death of democracy, if it is allowed to continue.

So, I believe it is quite easy to foresee the results of ending the estate tax. It is the death of democracy and the end of the American experiment in self-rule.

Are you in favor of killing off America?
