to obtain one-shot kills at a range of more than 2,000 yards.

I believe the max effective range is still listed as 2,200 meters (2,400 yards) in the manual.

Effective longer shots are now possible with better grade ammo and scopes.

Hoa Hao, Murphy was a great soldier that was only about 16 when he joined up. He grew up shooting rabbits with a 22 to feed his family because his daddy had left during the Great Depression.

I read it a little different on the Congressional Medal of Honor though. The men in his unit were advancing in southern France, when the Germans started a counter attack, and knocked out an American tank. He ordered his buddies to retreat, and climbed up on the tank to kill so many of the Germans that they turned tail and ran. During his firing of the 50MM machine gun, he was shot in the groin, and the bullet exited his butt, which prevented him for taking the appointment to West Point which had been offered to him. He was starting to limp back to HQ, when his troops advanced against the Germans, and totally defeated them in that region. Forgot to mention, that tank was on fire while he was firing it's machine gun, and was loaded with ammo. Such valor cannot be learned, but has to come from the gut when it is needed.

I'm a Texan, and went to the premier of the movie "To Hell And Back" which was about him, and all of his medals were displayed in the lobby of the Majestic theater in downtown Houston. He was a true hero, to this teenager.
