I think in many cases its not just a tactic, they come to truly believe it, like some of the highly partisan right think Clinton was a murderer and think that many on the left are traitors.

Your simile is hyperbolic. The highly partisan left thinks of Bush as a murderer as well a venal hypocrite and that he uses superstition as motive for deciding national policy. And some of us also think that many of the right have been working to mortgage the future of this great country so at to benefit the purse of one narcissist generation and the result will be tantamount to treason. This is symmetry you seek

The effective intelligence of our leaders is certainly more important than personal observations as to their individual IQ scores. So in that sense, it is clear that both Reagan and BWB have proven to be useful idiots in the promotion by the rich of the rights of property as the ultimate trump over the rights of the individual. And if it plays out, as it now seems it might within the next few years, that Bush has pushed this great nation into the disaster of insolvency, history will record him only as a destructive jingoistic fool with handlers who were quite skilled in marketing.
