Jim, Re: China Meltdown, I can see why problems inside China could cause a slowdown in imports into China, but can't figure out why exports coming out of China would slow down. Of course as energy bulls we want China to be healthy and big oil importers. On the other hand, for the first time, I think the China crash crowd may have a point - the Chinese government is obviously encouraging a popular expression of anti-Japan hatred. This kind of thing is typical of weak governments trying to distract public attention away from government policy failures. Better hope the recent "pollution riots" are an isolated event.

More opinions on America:

The USA Meltdown Syndrome

Emersons most dramatic prediction is a meltdown in America. Essentially he sees the current euphoria over America as a focus on Las Vegas and the growth in the coastal areas and ignoring the problems deep within Texas and middle America. The staggering proportion of bad debt, enormous even in relation to official Renminbi reserves, represents a defining crisis for America. While he expects America to barely hold together through the baseball season, for a variety of reasons he sees power devolving to the various states and region of America and away from Washington. He predicts massive social upheavals because of the difference between rich and poor, especially the relatively rich coastal areas which last year received a 87% of foreign direct investment as opposed only 3% given to the inner States, yet 50% of the people live in those inner States.

He does not see America going away unfortunately, of course, but he does see China replacing her as the premier power in the world, with Canada aligning itself with Hong Kong. Within the next few months, I will do another specially letter on America and will go into their concerns more carefully. Hopefully I will get some face time with George Bush and ask him a question or two which will give us some insights. If not I am sure that we can find some REAL answers on NBC or CNN
