Europe is in better shape than we are vis a vis energy and transportation. While the rightwing kills fast rail and public transportation bills (shilling for the auto and oil industries I guess) Europe has the best rail service anywhere. Their gasoline costs more because they tax the hell out of it, then use the proceeds to build such good public transportation you don't even really need a car. As a result they are much less vulnerable to energy crises and shocks.

We are basically slaves of the Saudis and Texas oil mafia. Why we need to break their monopoly by getting off the stuff. Kerry would have really done something about this. Don't expect Bush to do anything but kill more fuel efficiency bills. Bush-Cheney actually stand for sky-high oil prices. They fit their real agenda perfectly.
