Speak of the devil. It looks to me like cynical jingoism stirring up the mindless Chinese clones <Communist cadres openly acknowledge that nationalism is replacing Marxism as the raison d'être of the ruling party. 'Nobody understands Marxism. It is ridiculous,' says Li Rui, a former secretary of Mao Zedong. 'The ideals of the past don't exist any more. So it is right to turn to nationalism. It is the means by which the party can maintain its system and ideology.' >

They are taking the bait and performing as hoped by the CCP bosses.

One would think that the 20th century had shown the outcome of militaristic nationalism sufficiently that territorial expansionist megalomania would be seen for what it is. Perhaps each generation of young males feels the need to get all gory and learn about mortality so they can then babble away for a few decades about the horrors of war, "lest we forget", "never again"... blah blah blah "those who ignore the lessons of history are doomed to repeat this cliche"... yawn... plus ca change ... bring it on.

Nationalism is one important element of fascism. Other important elements of fascism are lack of respect for human rights for those who do not belong to the majority ethnic group of the nation, which leads to lack of respect for democracy. The final element is resurgent militancy.

Fascism has been poorly understood by political scientists because they tend to be leftists so look at the world through the framework set up by Marx. Marx didn't predict fascism, so his theories don't explain it.

Japan, of course, went through its own fascist period. Fascism has been very important in Latin America. It's a little known fact that the USA had fascistic elements, although I don't believe Canada ever did.
