Ironically and sadly, you are right.

After the oil crisis in the 70s all serious efforts towards energy independence slowed dramatically, and were relegated mostly to producing 30 years of "demonstrations" with just a few exceptions. The result was that the problem was never addressed.

I hope we get another oil crisis that brings us to our knees.

That seems to be the only way we might actually do anything about the problem.
