Petz, this isn't much of a consumer-marketing job. Primarily, it's about winning sockets from OEMs, who do understand a huge power differential like that. And then, AMD and those OEMs need to market those servers to IT folk. A small power difference is easier to hide, but consider a 4 socket box:

DC Opteron: 4 x 95W = 380W for CPUs + mem controllers
Dempsey: 4 x 150 + 4 x 20 (mc) = 680W for CPUs + mem controllers

That's closing in on DOUBLE the power requirement. OEMs, and IT purchasers are going to notice.

Petz:

My understanding for the flash IPO is that both assets and liability will be taken from AMD's balance sheet.

In doing so, do you expect a one-time expenditure entry to be eaten by AMD as well to ensure starting equity of $0 before the IPO is issued?

Upon completion of the flash IPO, then AMD's ownership value (the market value of the shares purchased by AMD) shows in AMD statements at market value?

Cojecture only on my part, as I really have no idea how the IPO will be reflected in AMD's statements.

Any thoughts you or anyone else can offer to clear "the mist" is appreciated.

Petz, With AMD marketing, it won't make a wit of difference.

That´s what I´m thinking, too. Besides, there will be lower power
Dempsey versions available with a power envelope that is close to
Opteron´s. They are not quite the same performance, but close enough.

INTEL simply designed their new platform to scale to a point where Opteron can´t quite keep up anymore. Winning benchmarks at all costs - it´s the Smitfield XE approach, just for servers. I´m hoping that INTEL won´t reach the 3.8Ghz frequency, but I´m not expecting it.

If I was INTEL, I´d do the exact same thing.
