It's from a Time magazine article that was already published on this thread. There is a search facility, if you care to look. Ritter's acceptance of the $400,000 for the documentary, which he does not deny, was well publicized.

You may find some answers here. Apparently the film debuted at the UN in June of 2001. The film did not have wide distribution...and may not have been available to many till 2002. And the film was probably under production as early as 2000. But the idea for the film was cemented before then.
