I think the purpose of the war was to gain access to resources on the cheap. You might remember the initial estimates of the cost of the war.

Islam had very little to do with Iraq, Iraq having been a secular state under Hussein. However, a lot of the propaganda clearly used that justification with the design to get the religious base to support the invasion.
