Well HT increases above 1 GHz will naturally improve SMP scaling and I think the latest spec is good for 2 Ghz. Also you must not forget that a lot of customers try out Servers on their own code and Opteron is not often found wanting in this respect so don't just take the common benchmarks into consideration. Sun's 8(16 with d/c)-way should be good as well and don't forget that AMD's 64bit implementation is superior in both integer performance and absolute memory support. Also its dual-core implementation is superior as benchmarks will show with latency improvements due to the crossbar helping to overcome the bandwidth sharing. I don't know why you are so concerned with Dempsey, the current best 2-way Xeons are 3.8 Ghz 2Mbs and they have not stopped Opteron.
