Taiwan -- for 50 years a Japanese colony and one of several bones of contention between Beijing and Tokyo -- is down 2 percent.

edition.cnn.com

I didn't know that Taiwan was a Japanese colony for 50 years. That would put its occupation start at 1895. Wonder if that is accurate?

And what sucks about the news is all the sources say the following: The slumping markets come after Chinese demonstrators rallied against...language in a textbook approved by Japan's education ministry that China has said "whitewashes" Japanese wartime atrocities.

but none of the news sources give the details. What exactly does the textbook say, and what do the protestors want the textbook to say?

"It's like the Israelis having a fit because the Germans want to be on the security council."

That is the political aspect of it. China is on the Security Council because Taiwan got booted off in favor of mainland China. That strengthens their claim on being the natural leader of the region. Putting Japan on the SC weakens it.

As far as nursing grudges from 60+ years ago, that can go on for a long time, especially if the government encourages it. In the US, the South nursed a grudge against the North up until there started to be real economic development starting roughly in the 1960s and 1970s.
