I won't go into the details here, but the VIX gave a short term buy signal, a very strong one, on Friday. With this spike up to the 17 level it signals a buy this morning and a hold for 2-3 days. The system that uses this signal is not always right (nothing is) but is a very solid system with excellent results. As with an OIH call play, it will pay to be conservative and see how the first hour plays out.

The way I use the VIX signal is to buy SPY calls (or puts on down spikes), since the VIX corresponds to the broader market. The VIXN also had a huge spike and gives a similar signal for the QQQQs. I understand from my friends who are TRINQ traders that extreme oversold signals are in the tea leaves there as well.

Just a little window on some of the very short term, purely technical signals. I wish there was a VIX like indicator for energy stocks.

JQP, I would venture to say there also appears to be some signs Japanese nationalism is also fueling the fire here but the Japanese are the good guys right now so I expect to hear much more on Chinese riots. The Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi appears to be taking a more outward view in foreign policy and the military. Some history of the Sino Japanese conflicts are being.. revised etc.. Allowing oil exploration in waters contested with China.. little things :O) The situation certainly bears watching...

As to energy... being conservative here with the bulk of energy in a couple of high yielding CanRoys.

JQP,

<<That is a signal that the Chinese leadership is trying to use Nationalism to deflect attention from itself and the countries problems. IMHO Nationalism/Patriotism being pushed is ALWAYS a bad sign for the country it is happening in.>>

I am curious how that also applies to our gold 'ol USA.

...in respect to weak dollar(higher oil....ouch!)
...bringing on higher interest rates...
...leading to collapsing real estate values...
w/o buffer of a strong manufacturing base to help us work our way out of it.

Virtually zero savings rate in the US. Highest debt ratios ever(in history?). 50% of real estate purchases are by way of ARM(!!!) and 36% were bought last year for "spec".

A collapse in the consumerism in the West...can it force China to accelerate nationalism? View the US as "weak" and not wanting another Gulf war III? Sabre rattling by USA against Iran(China's ally) leads to China military intervention in Iran/Iraq?

This is my scenario, but I've always been a doom & gloomer.
