Most, if not all, of those numbers could have been created if US had not such an anti-communism agenda, and allowed economic growth instead of decades of sanctions. Those numbers were created by anti-communist and anti-China propaganda machine, very much like the casualty numbers created during the Vietnam conflicts. Somebody can also make a big deal out of the number of annual deaths in the US that are related to respiratory illness such as the flu, and then concludes US healthcare stinks. The number is 2.5 million deaths due health related illnesses (heart attack, cancer, stroke, respiratory, accidents, diabetes, influenza/pneumonia, Alzheimer's, nephritis/nephrotic, etc.

No one bothers because it's a natural event and the cause of deaths could be others (such as old age and the body's reduced capacity to defend against the virus) rather than the flu itself.

All I am saying is that the numbers during the Cultural Revolution and various purges, are bogus. Life was hard, healthcare was poor, and people were forced to work in the farms, education was halted.
