"You didn't know that Chiang Kai Check and his nationalist China was fighting Japan during WW II?"

The Communist too. They had an alliance for a while against Japan. But they only won because Japan had distractions elsewhere.

But ok, most, but not all, of the numbers come from the Chinese. Some of the records used to arrive at the figures come from German and Japanese records seized at the end of WWII. Here is a link to the wikipedia entry.

When did the details on Nanking come out by the way?

Much of it right at the time it happened. At the time, Nanking was the capital of China and its population had swelled to one million people. There were foreign dignitaries living in the city. They created a safe zone. From there, they reported the atrocities to the outside world. Apparently, it took roughly six weeks time before it caught the world's attention. A lot of damage can be done in six weeks.
