But the chance of a defect in the shared components (MC + SRQ) is no greater than with single-core Opteron, so that shouldn't be that bad.

True. I would like to see a real die shot, to see if AMD took advantage of the dual core, and for the sake of efficiency, re-laid out the HT and DRAM so that they don't waste space. For example, these interfaces don't have to wrap around the sides any more.
