In fact, your POV was greatly considered during Roe vs. Wade. That's why most abortions are limited to the first term. Most abortions happen in the 1st trimester because 1 - If a woman doesn't want to be pregnant and is ok with abortion, she doesn't want to wait, and 2 - Abortions are cheaper and easier and safer (for the mother), earlier in the pregnancy. It has little to do with Roe vs. Wade. In the 2nd trimester Roe allowed for regulation only in the interest of the mother, the fetus couldn't be considered. Even in the third trimester the allowable regulation has been very limited, certainly no outright ban of abortion in the third trimester has held up to judicial scrutiny. An exception for the health of the mother has always been required by the courts and that exception has been interpreted so broadly that a woman can say "I have to have this abortion or I'll go crazy" (mental health) at 8 months and no state law can stop her. The Number of Abortions after the First Trimester Is Relatively Small Between 1990 and 1997, the number of abortions in the United States fell from 1,429,577 to 1,186,039 (CDC, 2000). The CDC estimates that 55 percent of legal abortions occur within the first eight weeks of gestation, and 88 percent are performed within the first 12 weeks. Only 1.4 percent occur after 20 weeks (CDC, 2000). Since the nationwide legalization of abortion in 1973, the proportion of abortions performed after the first trimester has decreased because of increased access to and knowledge about safe, legal abortion services (Gold, 1990). ppacca.org
