A typical tax library in a decent CPA firm fills a room about 12x15 covered in book shelves. Even then, if you practice tax law specifically, you need a backup organization for research to do it right. The whole thing is prepostorous." I agree completely... have for *years* now. The system seems to be getting worse though. (Maybe that's a good sign? Perhaps it will take a crisis of confidence in the federal budget and tax system to rouse the public into rattling the doors in Washington. We could be well on our way to that...) "And, to put the icing on the cake, if you are doing your own tax return, and call the IRS help line you have less then a 50% chance of EVEN THEM giving you the correct answer." LOL!!!!! (I think that '50%' figure is from the IRS's own study! I saw an outside study that showed even higher rates of incorrect answers --- they couldn't even do as well as a flipped coin.) "IMHO we need to chuck the whole thing and start over. My preference is a VAT tax, runner up is a flat tax." As you know, I'm in favor (first) of a flat tax... and I follow that choice up with my (second choice) of a sales tax (a consumption tax, but NOT a VAT because I believe the VAT hides to much info from the public about the amount of taxes they pay, and is subject to too much manipulation from the government). PS --- Forbes was speaking a few days ago at a Republican conclave (in Idaho, or Iowa, I believe...) and he came out with a call for TAX REFORM again --- said he could get behind either a flat tax or a consumption tax... anything but what we endure now.
