Wharf Rat, I am thinking in terms of those occasions when there is no next of kin or when there is a disagreement among family members and/or if the deceased is to be an organ donor.

There are statutes governing when and how a person can be pronounced dead and which licensed medical personnel (or law enforcement personnel) can make that determination and under what circumstances. - Holly
