Kettering was working on air-cooling at GM in the 20's but that was front engined I believe.

The Tuckers were rear-engined/air-cooled (helicopter motors), and we're certainly worse off for the lack of their success (..killed by GM and others..). The early Corvairs were death traps, but the '65 forward Corvairs were absolutely super - once you changed to Viton plastic o-rings and gaskets.

Who was first, I don't know.
