Let's assume a change in general attitude would lead to a national consensus that we really want less involvement of our government based on a major effort to outsource services to the private sector.
This would obviously also result in a major change of perception of the acceptable levels of taxation, right?

You pay less where less goods are received...

Thus the optimum taxation level moves down to new levels like 20-25% or so but nevertheless my argument still holds.

Never forget, however, that Democrats and other parties with a socialistic ideology want more involvement. And thus less freedom. Higher taxation is part of that drive. Thus we are discussing a dream, an Utopia at least in our time and until they have worked them self further down in the mud.
