I don't think the arid regions supported forest cover. I have never heard anyone suggest that clearing the forests has changed NZ's climate. We get the weather that the ocean gives us - quite different from a large land mass, which influences weather patterns.

It could be true that many NZers are not aware of how humans have transformed the country. I think about it a lot, though.
