"When AMD does make revolutionary changes in platforms they are prepared with new chipsets when necessary (as with the Athlon and Opteron launches)."

Minor correction, they weren't prepared with the original K7. VIA had promised, but not delivered. So AMD had to push into production their Irongate chipset, which was a proof of concept chipset. While it had some good features, it lacked some things a commercial chipset of the time should have. AMD did learn their lesson for the K8 which did introduce with a reasonable chipset from AMD. I doubt if they have forgotten that particular lesson.
