The oldest use of animals in the military would probably be for Calvary. I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals and it should be remembered that animals are usually highly regarded by their military and police handlers.

You think dogs don't know what they are doing when chasing bad guys with the police? If you believe that, you are wrong. The same applies to the military. Those dogs know what side they are on.
