EU Rules Change Urged over Dumped Fish By Geoff Meade, PA Europe Editor, in Brussels news.scotsman.com (Chucking dead fish back is probably one of the dumbest rules the EEC ever invented... pb) Euro-rules forcing fishermen to throw away undersized or surplus fish catches were today attacked as a “scandalous waste”. Scottish Tory MEP Struan Stevenson said about one million tonnes of fish were dumped dead back in the sea annually because of the Common Fisheries Policy. Fishermen have to ditch them or face prosecution for exceeding catch quotas or for netting immature tiddlers, contrary to conservation rules. Now Mr Stevenson says the valuable but illegal extra catch, when lifted accidentally, should be landed and used to boost struggling local fishing industries. Presenting his proposals to the European Parliament’s fisheries committee in Brussels he said: “Instead of criminalising our fishing crews we should be encouraging them to land these undersized and out-of-quota fish. Landing instead of discarding such fish would boost the fish oil and fishmeal sectors, on which about 30,000 European jobs depend. “These discards are worth fifty pounds a tonne – too little to encourage fishermen to target such fish, but enough to discourage continued dumping. “By allowing fishermen to land these fish, we support their incomes, boost fishing-related industries and provide our scientists with a more accurate picture of stock levels: discarding fish is a scandalous waste on all three fronts.” Mr Stevenson’s report also urges the European Commission and EU fisheries ministers to lift a current ban on feeding fishmeal to farm animals. “There is no scientific evidence to support a ban on the grounds that it may transmit BSE,” said Mr Stevenson.
