The good news being that he is 78 and statistically won't last that long. Perfect for an interim compromise while the church can confer about what they want to do for the long term...

Nah, this is what happened when they picked John Paul I (in the '70s). After an eventful papacy with a charismatic pope, the Vatican will sometimes choose an older pope with similar views as the preceding one, so they can "catch their breath" for a few years until figuring out their next move.
