There are some cardinals who would have opinions that are much more liberal than others, including some who would probably be far enough to the left to be consider outright socialists, supporters of "liberation theology" and such. But they are in the minority and I don't think they ever really had much chance of getting one of their number elected.

I doubt if there were many if any liberal cardinals. Most of the current cardinals were appointed by John Paul.

It was interesting to hear the comments from a group of American priests regarding the new pope. They were ragging more than I would have expected.
