It could be said it led directly to 9/11. What benefit do we derive from being so lopsidedly allied with Israel, which alienates the entire Arab world?

IMO, you have been sold a bill of goods. Hatred of the West has been an Arab stock in trade for a couple of centuries now, ever since Napolean and Nelson crashed the Ottoman Empire's slumber party. We would still be ruling the world like we used to and Allah told us we always should if only it weren't for the infidel west messing with us. The nasty Brits and French, succeeded by nasty US since they're top dog now. Etc, ad nauseum.

If this is how you feel about the West, then Israel's success is really unbearable, as Bernard Lewis points out. It's bad enough being bested by the great powers, but to be defeated and shown up by a gang of despicable Jews is just insupportable! On top of everything, they can't even blame their poverty since so many Arab states have oil money and Israel doesn't have any!

But if Israel weren't there to hate, there would be plenty of other targets, and plenty of need to find other scapegoats.

"There was a time when the US and the Arabs were great friends."

Oh really.
