I thought that teenager and his mother seemed fairly intelligent. I hope they do make it. I kind of got the idea it was a one-parent family situation, and that the youth had been way too influenced by his mother, and more specifically, by pleasing her. I am personally just as uncomfortable with Wiccan parents influencing their children's belief systems as I would be if they were evangelicals or whatever, though. If I were the mother, I would probably have honestly told the kid he looked absolutely ridiculous and that his appearance, which is superficial, might get in the way of his success. But teenagers are driven to establish their own identities--they must, or perish. They make lots of silly moves during that process. My daughter has a huge mermaid tattoo on her back at the waist that she got in a fit of rebellion. It is really spiritual to her, part of her identity, and it least it usually doesn't show, but I wonder how she will feel later about it.
