I didn't used to think so. I thought if you met fire with fire you would eventually get to somewhere else, or at the very least you wouldn't be wimpy in the face of fire- it seemed to me that civility, especially in the face of anger or attack, was a cop out. But, imo (and after much reflection), the hardest and best thing is to be kind to people, or at the very least ignore them, if they are horrible to you. It's so hard to do very few people actually do it. But I think it's an ideal to aspire to. Most religions acknowledge those values. Very few religions tell you to go out and be rude and obnoxious to people (even if you can convince yourself you have a good excuse)- it would be good if more people took heed of that.
