I don't have a big problem with the 'infallability of the Pope', since it is rarely invoked.

My problem with the Church is how hard it fights to prevent progress. There are a number of huge issues in the Catholic Church: only allowing celebate male priests; denying use of birth control, including condoms; inability to control rampant pedophilia within its ranks. By sticking to outdated dogma, they lose the faith of their parishioners. Then, by attacking dissidents and admonishing those who don't accept every single tenet of Catholic faith and ritual, they lose relevance and credibility.

This new Pope not only is not progressive, he may end up being regressive. However, he is fairly well along in years, and by reports frail, so he may have a short reign. It will be interesting to see if the Church will finally choose a Hispanic pope next...
